You are right, but that name change from Security Essentials to Defender only applies to Windows 10.

In earlier versions of Windows, XP, 7 and 8,Defender was just an anti malware program that protected you from email borne attacks, you had to update Defender to Security Essentials if you also want general anti virus protection as well.

Hi folks.
Just want to clarify something. Unless I'm wrong (and someone feel free to
correct me if I am), MSE has been replaced by Windows Defender. I guess the
two programmes are probably very similar. I've never used MSE but since
getting this Windows 10 machine I've been running Windows Defender and it is
indeed quite accessible, but if you want to read some of the information it
provides the JAWS cursor does seem like the way to do it. It isn't strictly
speaking necessary though. The thing about Windows Defender is that, unlike
other AV programmes, it is designed to be as unobtrusive and unnoticeable as
possible. And it's also built into the oS, which kind of gives it an
advantage. However it isn't rated as highly as Kasperski or Bit Defender in
its ability to detect and halt viruses. I'd say though that a 94% success
rate is good enough for most home users and will cover much of the stuff
that's out there "in the wild", so to speak. My old work used Scan from
network Associates, and I imagine they paid an exorbitant amount of money
for the license to do so, and that programme was terrible. I'd rely on
Windows Defender, a programme bundled "free" with your oS, before that crap
anyday.

But you should also get MalwareBytes to scan for malware and exploits,
because they are not the same as viruses and the two types of programmes do
not do the same thing.

I've been using MS Security Essentials ever since I started using JAWS
because it was the only free anti virus that didn't require me to jump
through all kinds of hoops just to access it. It may not be the best anti
virus available, but it does work and it's better than fighting with a
program that isn't really accessible.
