Internet Explorer has an option in its preferences to disable sounds in webpages. You could also try that. I don't use iE myself anymore and I haven't found this option in Firefox, but I haven't really looked into it extensively. Some of these pages that autoplay music have a frame in them with a series of buttons, including one that lets you stop or pause the audio. So depending on the page, also try navigating to buttons using "b", or even using the find feature to look for a word like "stop" sometimes works.
