It is an external drive that spins up. From the thread It most likely
has a corrupted partition table.
They still charge the 600 even if all they do is run the data recovery
software. This is what i am talking about
But anyway sorry about you losing all your files. That sucks....

that is not all that is involved.
it depends on what failed. if its a failed interface card in the
external case they would just put the drive in another case and send
it back.
or use software to try to copy the data to another drive.
anything else requires the use of a clean room environment
they would have to take the drive appart.
if its the drive interface they would try to use another interface
card on the old drive to see if they could retrieve the data and copy
it to a new drive.
if the drive motor is bad they would have to remove the drive
platters, install them into another drive of the same model and try to
retrieve the data this way with software.
thats why they charge so much. and if they were to have to install a
new drive for you in your computer it would cost even more.
even then you may not get all of your files back. chances are you
would still have to re install jaws and all your other programs to get
everything back the way it was.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drive is dead
what a scam! 600 dollars to run a software prggram to get the data lost
because their drive failed?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. It is not worth the $599 to have
the data
recovered. I tried a few programs and I do not have enough space on my
computers to try and recover the data. I located a partition recovery
program that can not locate any partition. I ran a few scan programs
that
ran for about 8 hours and did not detect anything. I gave up and decided
just to reformat the drive and get errors. I called Seagate and the tech
linked into my computer to do the reformat for me. He received the same
errors so a new drive is on the way. I have a $11.95 charge. This covers
shipping both ways. I have 25 days to return the dead drive. He
explained
how they make sure that any data on my drive is totally destroyed. I
should
have it in 3 to 5 days for a few dollars more I could have it in 2 days.
