Hi, Michelle, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. Bitlocker is definitely a
pain as I have to use it as I am an employee of the department of defense.
The only way that I cope with it is to count to twenty once the computer
starts and then put in my pin number. I do have a braille display so once I
know that the computer has started which I can tell as my braille display
will give its manufacturer name and nodel when windows first starts and
that's when I then start counting. Once I put in my pin number and wait
several seconds, the computer then will give the windows start sound if it
doesn't, I then have to backspace 7 times to re-enter my pin number and then
again press enter and then the computer usually starts up. It certainly is
frustrating and we've even checked with Microsoft to see if there's a
solution. They advise that there isn't one at this point. Your employer
could putyou in a special security group and disable bitlocker but the
department of defense has a rule that any laptop that is sued for telework
must be encrypted so that's why we have to use bitlocker. We used to use a
product called safenet and there was a registry tweak with that program
whereby we would hear a tone and series of beeps which was our auditory
indication for entering the pin number. Once you'd hit enter, you'd then
get another series of tones to let you know that you pin had been entered
correctly. There was another set to indicate that you hadn't put in the
correct number. I hope that this will help as I definitely know how
frustrating it is when there's nobody sighted who can assist you. Let me
know if I can be of further assistance. BZ!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Bit Locker

Hello,

I truly hope someone on the list can answer this one. Recently, Bid Locker
was installed on a new computer my employer provided me for telework and
it has given me the absolute blues!

When I turn on the computer, JAWS does not speak. So how am I supposed to
know when to attempt to log-in? I had the Help Desk call Freedom Scientific
to get instructions on starting JAWS at Start Up. However, that does not
work. Plus, with laptops being much quieter now, I cannot even determine if
the thing is on! Any suggestions or comments?

Right now, I make sure I am aided by my roommate prior to him leaving for
work, but, if I allow the computer to go into sleep mode, I am lost and the
balance of my work day is compromised. I just want to telework like I used
to prior to all this security. Help!

Thanks,

Michelle
