I tried it too and jaws just said, battery status not found.
I did go into the sys tray and entered on battery on AC power and then I
was given 2 options and I went to power settings. Then I looked through
the control tab pages and under the advanced one is a check box to have
your battery to show in your system's tray, so it doesn't seem to appear
it was placed in there by default of the manufactor since you can uncheck
this to not show in the tray..

Blind-computing, but here goes.
Once I get my new laptop, how to I check, with JAWS, the battery status
so
that I know when it needs a charge?..For instance, on my PACMate, the
battery level is on the Today sceen...On my cell phone running Windows
Mobile with MobileSpeak, I just double-tap a section of the screen to get
the battery status.
