It can fry it.  There are two fans:  The PC fan, and the motherboard fan. 
The computer tries to save itself, but there is only so much it can do.  The 
PC fan can be fixed (by a replacement fan) fairly easily.  When the 
motherboard fan goes, so does the motherboard; and that all takes longer and 
is more expensive.

I am working on a computer with a non-functioning fan.  It operates
really slowly.  This is the same one that takes 90 seconds to load
JAWS at start-up.  Can the heat from not having a fan slow down the
computer?  Is it trying to save itself from committing suicide????
