It can fry it. There are two fans: The PC fan, and the motherboard fan. The computer tries to save itself, but there is only so much it can do. The PC fan can be fixed (by a replacement fan) fairly easily. When the motherboard fan goes, so does the motherboard; and that all takes longer and is more expensive.
