Do these people have wireless routers connected to their cable modems? There
is nothing against the law about connecting to a wireless point even if you
have to guess at or fudge security passwords and such.
If you go to the wireless network in control panel you should be able to
find a choice to find wireless networks. If there is a transmitting wireless
router within range of your computers radio it should show up in the list.
Usually the router name also known as the SSID is shown and some indication
as to if it is a open or secured network. If it is a secured network you
will need to select the proper encryption protocol, encryption key and the
correct password before you can connect. If an unsecured or open network you
should be able to connect immediately.
Remember though that they will have had to buy and install a wireless router
which is essentially a duplex radio transmitter and receiver. If they can
connect without plugging directly into their cable modem then you will be
able to do so too. Otherwise you will have to plug into their modem and
configure your computer with their ISP provider gateway and DNS information.

Could anyone on this list that’s familiar with wireless cards, with lap top
computers, please give me instructions on the following problem.
Whenever I visit my nieceshouse and try to use my lap top computer, I’m
unable too pick upany signal. She and her husband are connectedtoo com cast
cable. Does anyone know if their’s some kind of specific code that they use
so that I can have my wireless card on my lap top computerconnect and be
able too receive a signal? Also, is this considered illegal?Because if it
is, That’s something that I don’t want too do at any cost. I also experience
this same sortof problem when I'm visiting my girl friends house, even
though she only livs six floors above me. We both use Verizon as our inter
net provider.
