Brian, The correct symbol for a line-break (or 'soft return') is ^l [shifted6l], as distinct from paragraph mark (or 'hard return') which is ^p [shifted6p]. When shift-down-arrow is pressed, a 'line' is selected which, if it is blank, is a paragraph mark or 'new line'. Lines have to break up anyway, which causes soft returns and thus ^l (carat l) is the actual character for this.

A paragraph mark is used for soft or hard returns. To replace paragraph marks in Word bring up the "Find and replace" dialog using CTRL+H to move focus into the "replace" page. In the edit box type a caret (shift f6) followed by a letter "P", use tab key to the replace all button and depress it. This will remove all paragraph marks in the document. Take care.
