Hi, Cathy.
Have you routed the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor to see if there's another
window or dialog on top of the document window? I know JAWS 10 is better
about keeping focused when that happens, but I've had it happen to me, so
thought I'd throw out the suggestion.
Also, I don't think Markup needs to be checked unless you're using that
option.

I have jaws 10 & using ms word 2003. The difficulty is when reviewing text
or when editing - words go missing.
similar to this blank blank line. Sometimes if I go letter by letter I can
spell the word out, but this is not normal! I have just reviewed settings
of xp and made sure they are in place, but other than normal checked and
zoom at 75% what else can I check or uncheck?
