Hi Al,

I removed Trend Micro Antivirus which came on my laptop with a 3 year subscription. I still have at least a year left but was ready to dump it anyway. It can be very annoying! Security Essentials does a thorough scan in about the same time with less load. Of course, it does add load and slow things down some, but it did not effect JAWS speaking at all. Trend Micro would pop up unexpectedly while typing and would slow down the system even just reading mail! If Security Essentials does not work out, I probably will run Avast or A V G.

Donald,

Sounds encouraging. What anti-virus were you using and
subsequently uninstalled? Also, with the 5 hour scan, were
you able to use your machine without a noticeable decrease
in performance?

I installed Security Essentials last night. It seems
completely accessible.
Immediately after installing, I ran a complete scan. I was
happy to see
that it was faster than Microsoft's Malicious Software
Removal Tool (MRT)
for a thorough scan! It took about 5 hours for about 130 GB
where MRT takes
over 8 hours on my laptop. It found two programs in my
Archive of software
of two program installers that it flagged as Spyware! I do
not have these
programs installed. MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Trend
Micro (this is
only an antivirus) and MRT never flagged these files. I do
not know if this
means Security Essentials is superior or just more picky,
but I was
impressed. I was even more impressed at how easy it was to
read details
about the suspected files and to perform the desired
actions. Every aspect
was accessible! I leave the objective rating process to
others. Read the
review from PC Magazine at:
Microsoft's Security Essentials: Not Bad, Not Great -
Reviews by PC
Magazine

The biggest issue I may have with Security Essentials is
its definitions
update process. It is integrated into Windows Update. At
first that sounds
great. However, I am cautious and have Windows Update set
to notify me when
there is an update rather than automatic updates, which
Microsoft heavily
encourages. I do not know how I will feel about this until
I use it for a
few weeks. It seems that either I will get annoyed that
there is an update
every day and have to perform an update or I just start
ignoring the update
notifications. I will be less aware of a critical update
when it is
available. I hate the idea of automatic updates of major
updates, like IE8
or a Service Pack. I wish there were separate settings for
the definitions
updates! Is this possible and I just missed it?

David,

I think we may take it that, insofar as it is an antivirus
program, then
it would conflict with any other antivirus program being
run at the same
time. (This is the usual operating assumption (borne out
by experience of
users who've tried to run more than one simultaneiously)
with antivirus
programs.) Insofar as other, stand-alone, anti-spyware
programs are
concerned, it wouldn't conflict with them. For myself,
as I have just
recently resubscribed and upgraded version 4 of Nod32
security suite, for
now I am pretty well covered. It would be nonetheless
worth knowing how
MSE does in comparison tests with other similar programs
free, and paid.

A remarkably unhelpful and dismissive response.
I have read these pages several times and I have not been
able to spot
whether there would be a conflict with other packages.

Read the page for it and it will tell you.

I guess
we'll need some research findings on how good an
anti-virus program
it actually is.

First, MSE is an antivirus/antimalware program, and
second, it's
free. thirdly and finally, it's completely accessible
and is
available from

I wonder does anybody know if this works with any
existing anti malware
or
anti virus commercial applications like AVG installed?
It is not clear
on
the Microsoft page.
Commercial Anti- virus programs normally do not like
being installed
at
the
same time as another anti-virus program.

Yes, it is accessible, and free. It also allows you to
schedule
automatic
scans.

Hi listers. MS has just released its new free
anti-malware program,
Microsoft Security Essentials, for public download.
Has anyone tried
it
out yet during the beta testing cycle? Is it really
JAWS-friendly and
easy to use? Based on the overwhelmingly positive
preliminary
reviews,
it

looks like MS has hit a home run. If MSE is truly
JAWS accessible, it
sounds like a great alternative to the free versions
of AVG and Avast.
If
you're interested in learning more about MSE, check it
