What about shutting down/restarting/log off the computer? Does that do what
the safely remove hardware would do but in addition do the appropriate
action you took?

I don't see a question related to your subject line. However, but the rule 
of thumb is you should always use "safely remove hardware" located in the 
system tray prior to disconnecting most USB external devices. I learned this

the hard way because I crashed my Ipod a couple of years ago by just 
snatching it out of the computer.
