Hello, People who can only use one hand when using the keyboard or those who otherwise have problems with using keystrokes might also consider setting their JAWS key as a sticky key. This can be done in addition to using the sticky keys feature in Windows.
To set the JAWS key as a sticky key you need to first determine whether you need the laptop or desktop configuration. Most people will already have set the keyboard layout they want to use, but here is how it is done. 1. Move into the JAWS interface window. 2. Press the Alt key, use down arrow and then press enter on the "basics" choice. 3. use tab key to move to the "use keyboard layout" combo box and then up or down arrows to select either desktop or laptop. 4. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. Here is how to make the JAWS key work as a sticky key: 1. Use JAWS key (caps lock on laptops, number pad insert key on desktops) with function key 2 to bring up the list of JAWS managers. 2. Press the letter "s" or use down arrow to the "Script Manager" choice and press enter key. 3. Press Alt+F to bring up the file menu. 4. Use down arrow key to the "open shared file" choice and press enter key. 5. Type in "default.jkm" (without the quotes) and press enter key. 6. In the default keyboard manager press CTRL+f to bring up the find dialog box. 7. If using a laptop then type in [laptop and press enter key. (That is a left bracket followed by the word laptop and with no spaces). If using a desktop keyboard layout then type in [desktop. (The left bracket is the key to the right of the letter "p." 8. After typing in either [laptop or [desktop then press enter key. 9. When the first occurrence of your text being searched for is found then press tab key a few times to the "find next" button and press enter key. 10. Press the escape key. 11. The cursor will be on a line of text that either says "desktop modifiers" or "laptop modifiers." Use down arrow one time. 12. If using a laptop the following line should be presented: Capslock=0|3|0|0|0|0 If using a desktop the following line should be presented: Insert=0|3|0|2|0|0 The fifth digit in the string of text needs to be changed to 1 from 0. This is the second to the last 0 in the string of text. Use arrow keys to move on to that digit, delete it and type a number 1 in its place. Do not delete any of the vertical bars or other digits. All you are doing is replacing the second to the last 0 in the string of text with the number 1. Be sure to use the alphanumeric key for the number 1 and don't use the number 1 on the number pad. 13. Press CTRL+s to save changes and then use Alt+f4 to close the file. 14. You might need to restart your computer, but at least you should restart JAWS. You should now be able to press the JAWS key and release it, and then press a separate key to perform a JAWS function. Press JAWS key and release it, and then press a "T" to hear a title bar read by JAWS. If after restarting your computer you go back into the default.jkm file through the "open shared file" choice in the script manager's file menu, you will find that the string of text you modified might still show the second to the last digit in the string of text you changed as a 0 and not as 1. Even though this is still shown, the JAWS key should be working as a sticky key. If you want to remove the sticky key feature then you will need to delete the second to the last digit in the string of text even if it is still a 0 and replace it with a 0. You can then save changes with CTRL+S and close the file. Restart your system or at least JAWS. Your JAWS key should no longer work as a sticky key when this procedure is followed.
