Switch is the audio converter I use for this task and is Jaws friendly. Use the space bar to hit buttons rather than the enter key and the program is fine. Size is not the only thing you need to consider though. The higher the bit rate, the higher the sound quality and the larger the file. What is a suitable rate is controversial . Once 128 was considered high quality whilst as disc sizes increase people can now argue that 320 is needed. I saw an email from someone recently claiming that anything ripped off a CD that was less than 320 is a "disgrace". Personally I use 192 but probably would struggle in reality to tell the difference between 128 and 320 but I am hearing impaired. The other factor to consider is whether you want constant or variable bit rate format. Variable VBR files will take up less space than constant CBR files but will not be supported on all mp3 players and older software packages.
As someone said - a can of worms might be opening up here. For example are you talking about Cds audio ? Wma files ? Wav files ? Mp4? Sony acc files? As a potential destination format I think ogg has a smaller file size than mp3 but is not supported across all devices. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't MP3 the smallest possible format, or is there a different 1 I know nothing about? Thanks.
