David, Thanks.
I was aware of the taskbar and how to navigate among the components on the
taskbar, pin them, remove them, etc. I was just confused about the show
desktop button that is there after shift-tabbing from the desktop...

Hello there;

windows 7, has no quick launch bar.

in windows 7, you can now, pin or unpin items on the taskbar.
you then can access the various items on your taskbar, by using the
keystroke, window-key+#1 or, 2 or 3 etc, pending on how many items you have
pinned to the taskbar.
you can get to the first item by, using the keystroke, windows-key+t.

hope this helps.

I always disabled the Quick Launch Toolbar, so I am unclear. But as I
remember, the Notification Area, also called the System Tray , is at the far

right of the bottom of the screen and thus just before the Desktop in the
forward cycle. By using in conjunction with the Shift key, this would cycle

the other direction. However, I am unclear where the Quick Launch Toolbar
is normally located.
