You have my genuine respect for giving it a go sir. I'll be as much help as I can, I am a single mom and full time student going through finals, so please be patient with any time lapses that may occurr. It isn't because I don't want to help. Now, What operating system are you using? I ask because that will tell me where to direct you to find your default programs setting. In XP, I believe it is in the All Programs menu, or it is in the control pannel. I have not used XP for several years, so don't remember where things are exactly. Do a little exploring, and see if you can find it. As far as the ribbons are concerned, they are frustrating for everyone who comes to them from the classic menu style, sighted or not. They are merely icons in a string, so many sighted people are frustrated by them grately. We are at somewhat of an advantage, because at least JAWS tells us what we're looking at, it's not just some abstract picture of say, a pair of binoculars for zooming. They are completely usable though, and many of the old hotkeys are still functional, so finding a list of hotkeys may be of use. I use them frequently, such as control shift P to control and minnipulate my fonts and style. Hope this is helpful, Melissa

No, I have not tried to reinstall or remedy at all. Once the word program has opened a word pad file, it works fine. It simply has a long fight before being able to open the word pad file. Frankly, I prefer to have access to the word pad files without interference from word 2007 because it is so much easier for me until I get a better grasp of the 2007 commands; I have not used word for more than ten years and am very rusty. You mention 'default' possibilities; that would be fine by me if I can direct 2007 not to be the default for some time while I am engaged in the learning curve. Melissa, I am eighty years of age, and getting up to speed with 2007 may be a while. It has been my experience that settings often can be fixed to make programs more compatible with Jaws and wonder about any such possibility with 2007. I also mentioned a possibility of finding a tutorial which might help me understand the 'ribbon' and other features. I do have the Reference on 2007 from the Printing House but could appreciate a little more verbiage in its approach. Sorry to have so much to say and ask. Thanks for your thoughts, and thanks for anything more you can add.
