A good antivirus program should take care of any risks from the reading pane by scanning incoming emails.

Hi Susan.

About the E-mail client, i can tell you, that i have Used Windows Live Mail both on a 32 bit Windows 7 laptop computer, and on a 64 bit Windows 7 desktop computer.

There are some diffaculties reading e-mails, send by som e-mail client's, and therefor i have left the reading phane visible, so when a hit on the enter key was whithout any result, than i escaped back to the inbox, and tab'ed into the reading phane, and here i always get result.

There is a security risc by having the reading phane visible, because the letter changes from unread to read, after highlighting in 5 second's, but this can be changed in the options menu, so it is possible to hear whom the mail is from and the subject, and getting it deleted, before the letter changes to read, and if it should contain a dangerous virus, that automatically would start working, not will be any risc for you, because you have had the time to permanently delete it before. Just change the time from 5 second's to 60 second's, so you have time enough to do your task.

I don't hope that i have scared you by this last information, but we are living in a riscful world.

Hans Pauli.

Jim,
Thanks for your response about the JAWS settings. The reason I'm asking so specifically about individual programs is that my son will essentially be putting together this PC from a kit so it will not have the usual bloatware, which means that we are trying to remember what we need to bring it up to
speed. For example, it's my understanding that Windows 7 will include
Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. Since I'll likely have to
download some things once I'm up and running, I obviously need a web browser to do this and wanted to be sure I didn't have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it. As to the email client to use, I've tried both Outlook and Windows Live Mail ever so briefly but not long enough to feel comfortable with either one. I will be getting JAWS 12 next week and will have a few weeks to play with it before purchasing and setting up the new PC, so maybe it is time to revisit outlook. Again, I really appreciate your thoughts on all this and will probably have more specific questions as I get further
into this.

Susan
