Doris,

Before my current round of trouble started about a week and a half ago, JAWS 9
and 10 were installed. My SMA went to JAWS 12. JAWS 11 was on the machine,
but not installed.

About a week and a half ago I lost speech , on the XP Home and it re-booted
itself with a this computer has recovered from a serious error message and it
said it was the blue screen error. I couldn't get any version of JAWS to talk
at all and computer literate sighted assistance couldn't get it talking with
the mouse. We did a remote session with my tech and he couldn't get it talking
either. When he heard about the blue screen error message, he said that it had
happened to a lot of local computers lately due to frequent lightning strikes
in the area. He concluded that the sound card needed to be replaced and came
over the next day and put in a replacement sound card. He installed JAWS 12
from the CD while he was here.

Part of the problem is that when I unload JAWS 10 to load J9 to go into basics
or whatever they called it then to tell J9 not to load on startup, before I can
press JAWS key-J, JAWS almost immediately says Activate button and wants to be
activated.

Currently, there are icons on My Desktop for JAWS, 9, 10, and 122. J11 has not
been installed.

It's been a long week and any more suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Margaret

Dear Miss Margaret,

You should not have to activate your jaws 9.0 in order to turn off
the "run jaws first" option in it.

when it comes up after boot up and asks to be activated, have it run
in 40-minute mode instead. This is plenty of time to go into its
basic options and to uncheck the "run first jaws" (or run jaws at
windows startup" or whatever it is called these days.

when you have unchecked the option in jaws 9, tab to the "OK" tutton,
enter on it. then close out jaws 9 and bring up jaws 10 or whatever
version you want to have coming up when you start your computer. go
into its options and and check the checkbox to have it start
automatically. This should fix the problem.

I can only guess to the reason why your jaws 9 wants to be activated
when your 10 is working fine. Did you by any chance get a new jaws
license in between so that the newer jaws maybe has a diferent
serial number? You cold check the serial number - not the long
activation code) when you bring up the different versions to fix the
automatic startup. This is just a wild guess, though.

good luck and keep us posted!

Cheers,

Doris
