Doris and All,

I'm probably about as set as I'm going to be. JAWS 10 does not seem to want to
run as a service on this machine and at least now seems to be coming up talking
after system boot up. I tried copying the JAWS 10 icon on my desktop to my
startup folder as a temporary solution as you suggested and thought it had been
successful to at least have J 10 come up talking at some point. It wasn't
doing it 100% of the time, though and somehow, my efforts without sighted
assistance available apparently resulted in the OE menu bar being moved. I'd
thought something was blocking My Desktop and had planned on calling my tech
for a remote session anyway, but the new OE problem made that essential.

He didn't find anything blocking My Desktop, but I did see something one time,
but wasn't able to determine what it was. I vastly prefer DEC-Talk Access 32
to Eloquence and another tech at his shop has seen the screen I think is
causing the problem and he thought it had something to do with DEC-Talk Access
32, but hadn't heard of it and wasn't sure.

The remote session with my tech got J10 talking after boot up and I had to wait
until this morning to call FS about the activation problem with J9 because of
threatened severe thunder storms.

The FS support guy thought the activation problem was "weird," so seemed to
agree with all of us here about that. He thought uninstalling JAWS 9 probably
wouldn't cause J10 to decide it wanted to be activated since it would then be
the earliest version. He tried to encourage me to uninstall JAWS 9 and 10. I
didn't have any problem uninstalling J9 as long as it didn't create more
activation problems, but I'm almost positive that 10 is the last JAWS version I
can continue to have my beloved DEC-Talk Access 32 run on.

After I hung up, I got 9 uninstalled and 10 doesn't seem to demand to be
activated, so I'm happy.

Margaret

The new soundcard would be the reason your older jaws want to be activated.

for a fix until you can get your activation problem sorted out next
week, you can copy the shortcut from your desktop for the version of
jaws you want to run - and that is activated - into your startup
folder. This will give you speech automatically once your desktop is
loaded. It is not quite the same as loading jaws as a service but
should do the trick unless you need to have jaws speak at the logon screen.

jaws is way too picky about hardware changes with its activation. You
might want to look into getting a hardware dongle to avoid such
problmes - or see if the free nvda isn't sufficientfor what you need
to do on the computer. <g>
