You're right, you enable numpad then hold down the alt key and type 251.

Hi All;

How does someone type the Checkmark / Square root symbol? I did a search & received mixed information. 1 search said that typing the ascii code, Alt + 251, is the checkmark / square root symbol & another result from the search said that there is not a way to type the square root symbol. Personally, I
would think there is a keystroke for it, or people wouldn't be able to do
math equations using a keyboard. Would you all please settle this, & let me
know what the keystroke / ascii code for the checkmark / square root is?
