Hi Steve;

When I do the, Alt + 251 keystroke, Jaws reads U circumflex.  Is that what 
Jaws will read but, it's actually a checkmark / square root symbol?  Thank 
you very much for your response & advice / help.  Take care.

  You're right, you enable numpad then hold down the alt key and type 251.
