Daily Tip:
Improve Vista's Startup Time
If your Windows Vista PC seems to load slower than it used to, you can stop
some of the applications that load when you start Vista to make the PC
startup faster. Click the Start button, choose All Programs, and select
Windows Defender. Select the Tools buttons, click Software Explorer, and
click Startup Programs under the Category box. Select the application (or
applications) that you want to disable at startup and click Disable.
Daily Term:
write protect
A means of preventing users from editing files or saving files to a storage
medium. Information can be write-protected in at least three ways. Through
an operating system's file management features, users can activate a
read-only attribute on files by using a command such as MS-DOS' ATTRIB. On
networks, sharing software can establish security settings that provide
write access to some users but not others. Lastly, diskettes have fairly
unsophisticated write-protect mechanisms. On a 5.25-inch diskette a square
notch is carved out of the side of the diskette (probably next to the
label); covering the notch with tape restricts users to read-only access. A
3.5-inch diskette has a square hole in the upper corner of the diskette
(again, probably near the label). A tab slides over the hole to lock the
diskette, sliding it away from the hole restores write access.
