Hi Joni, I had a look at WordPad on my Win7 system, and low and behold, Microsoft strikes again! It too, has that useless ribbon instead of menus. Once I saw that, I didn't even bother with trying to open a .doc file. In this case, as others have suggested, I think some third-party software is the best bet. HTH, Rick Justice

Is this true or false? Can a person still assign a file extension association and do this with Windows 7? This will work for you, until you can get a conversion program. Hope this helps. Take care. My new computer did not have microsoft word installed, so I am using wordpad. Can anyone recommend a free program that converts .doc files to .txt files that is jaws friendly,, or some other solution short of purchasing Word? Thanks in advance for help.
