This will not be of any great help for your problem, but my JAWS does not remove the UNRD flag on messages if you are just using your cursor to see what the subjects Is and not opening the message. There are settings in JAWS that control what labels (like UNRD) are spoken. So the best you can do would be to go through the JAWS settings.
