I have never bothered to customize punctuation in this manner and it sounds
counter intuitive to me. I have not used Word at home enough the past few
months to know, but in Jaws 9 which I have at work I set the punctuation
level to read most in Word and to read some in the rest of the programs I
use and all works fine, think I did it in the say text dialog but, again, it
was over four years ago when I set that up and have not been back to change
it since.

My work supposedly is getting 13 for me this fall, nothing like always being
behind, and very occasionally when looking for something either place I get
confused between 9 and 13 and sit there for a few seconds trying to remember
which version accessed what in a given manner.

You could customize your punctuation in Microsoft Word. Open its Settings
Center (or JAWS Configuration manager), then choose alt-s for Settings , p
for Punctuation. UNDERSTAND that the customize punctuation dialogue works
counter to how the JAWS general punctuation settings are spoken. If you
customize a sign's punctuation setting to NONE, it means there in the
application you're setting the values for that that punctuation sign will
never be silenced. Conversely, if you were to customize a particular
punctuation sign to ALL, that means that it will always be silenced where
you are setting it. After you have customized your punctuations in word to
your requirements, I would then go and lower the general punctuation for
JAWS. In an application or program, the customized punctuation settings take
precedence over the general JAWS punctuation settings. Just remember that
they work oppositely, (as eoutlined above). Also be aware that some speech
synthesizers are hard-wired to speak certain signs; the apostrophe ' for
example being one of Eloquence's bugbears.
