Can you just save it first? If that is not possible, then go down to the word options and change it so that it saves every minute.

I have a sighted computer person who transferred all my stuff to the WIN7 computer last December. I thought the Word problem would disappear on the new computer, but it didn't. It's hard to describe but occasionally, when I try to close a document, it won't close. It tells me that it's still open somewhere else even when I have a document that hasn't been saved and I just want to close it. It tells me that it wants to rename the document as "normal" and if I won't do that, it asks me if I want to change the universal template. If I say "no", I can close the document. But if I'm trying to save a document and Word decides to do this, then I lose the document. I have office 2007, and between digging around and using the old keystrokes which mostly still work, I do fine. Office doesn't generally just quit, either you have something wrong with your computer's hardware or you have some sort of virus.
