The best solution, short of upgrading word, is to periodically save a
new normal.dot template file. Periodically, because it'll be good for a
while and then start nagging again.

won't close. It tells me that it's still open somewhere else even when

that,
it asks me if I want to change the universal template. If I say "no",
I can
close the document. But if I'm trying to save a document and Word
decides to
do this, then I lose the document.

I don't use virtual ribbons at all. I have office 2007, and between
digging
around and using the old keystrokes which mostly still work, I do
fine.
Office doesn't generally just quit, either you have something wrong
with
your computer's hardware or you have some sort of virus.
