According to the documentation on my system FN f8 toggles the touch pad. I
notice from your original message that does not work, it  does on mine
although you need to do it every time the system boots up. 

I got mine in December of 2009 if that helps you at all.

The F8 or FN plus F8 does not do it so hopefully there will be a lister who
owns such a model and can tell me.

I think it may be either the F8 key on its own or the FN Key +F8. It's a
toggle. I don't have it now, but the lenovo model i had access to didn't
have an easy  way to disable it completely, so you had to disable it per
session.
