 my cells are not in consective order so that is why I did + sign. I get 11
08 11 when I use : any other suggestions.

Hi Scott.
Here is what works for me. I am using Excel 2007.

If I want to add the sum of cells K1 through K5, do the following.

=sum(k1:k5)
Note: it may help to read this formula
character by character to hear where the colons and parentheses are.
