press insert f11, arrow to speakers, enter on open volume control, there should be a volume setting for JAWS. left or right arrow cursor keys should adjust the setting. there's no okay button to save, just alt+f4 to save and exit the volume control.

It does not appear to have the problem when playing music. My new observation is that the computer sounds, I.e. beeps etc., are much louder than the JAWS’ voice, instead of being the background.
