Well, this is certainly unfortunate.

I say this because I believe this has only changed recently--although how
recently, I'm not sure.

At least I know where to get the messages now if I need them.

Tom,

I have discovered the answer to your question I do believe. As it turns out, an
IMAP account cannot save messages to the drafts folder by default in Outlook,
and it cannot be made to do so at this point. As I stated earlier, they are
stored in the Outlook Data File. Here is a link to some discussion on the
Microsoft Answers website dealing with your exact issue:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-outlook/outlook-2010-imap-drafts-saved-to-incorrect/e6fd8117-8054-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

This should clear the whole thing up for you. Unless Microsoft decides to
change the way Outlook handles saved messages for IMAP accounts, this will not
change.

Best,
Mike

I've already tried your first set of steps several times, but have had no luck.

What I haven't yet tried is your second set of steps regarding the default
folder startup.

I wonder if this is where my problem is.

I'll give all of this a try again on both my home PC and work laptop, and let
you know the final results.

I want to say here that I appreciate your and everyone else's patience as we

okay Tom;
just so I'm clear;
have you tried the following?

Change the time interval or location for saving drafts

By default, unfinished messages are saved to your Drafts folder every three
minutes. You can change this time interval or location.

1. Click the File tab.
alt+f=file,
2. Click Options.
here you can press the letter t=options, or, up arrow and enter on options,

3. Click Mail.
here just down arrow until you hear the word mail spoken, 4. Under Save
messages, do one or more of the following:
so use the tab key and look for,
saved messages,

• Change where drafts are saved

• In the Save to this folder list, click Drafts, Inbox, Sent Mail, or Outbox.
now, you need to make sure that you okay your way out to save the change.
as for changing the default folder startup,

alt+f=files,
T=options,
a=advanced,
now use the tab key, going from memory here, I believe you will see, Outlook
start and exit, anyway, somewhere here there should be a browse button, once
you enter on the browse button, you can use your arrow keys to select the
startup outlook folder.
hope I was able to convey my thoughts properly.
if not, I will try again.
hope this helps.

Thanks, Rick. ... I will keep this in mind for sure.

And, as a general remark to list members, I apologize if my previous remarks
about Microsoft updates and changes seemed a bit snarky. It's just so
frustrating sometimes when things that worked perfectly at one time with the
same program no longer do, for reasons that are not readily apparent to the
average end user like myself.

Hi Tom,
Here's a thought.
If you suspect that what you are experiencing is the cause of a Windows
update, or more specifically, an update to Microsoft Outlook, you could look
through your list of installed updates, and un-install updates to Outlook to see
if the desired behavior is restored.
This could become time-consuming, but may yield the results you are looking for.
Sometimes there are updates to Microsoft Outlook that are not for security, or
even critical for that matter, and this is also true of the updates for the
Windows operating system.
If you decide to follow this path, just make sure you understand what you are
removing before doing so.
If you have any questions, just sing out!

HTH,

Wow, this seems to be much more difficult than it really needs to be.

The thing that is most irritating to me is that I didn't have this issue with
Outlook 2010 up until as recently as a few months ago.

Why Microsoft feels the need to make changes that tamper with someone's e-mail
folder structures is a major mystery to me.

All I know is that it is this sort of thing that is causing more and more
people to shift away from Windows-based operating systems for their computing
needs.

concluded.

Hi tom,
It seems you have set up multiple accounts in your Outlook 2010.

So if you do a control Y and then a left arrow you can then get to a list that
you can select which account you are in. when you do this and do a test email
to yourself and before you send it hit escape it should automatically go to
draft or you will be asked if you want to save it. If you say yes then do
another control Y and go to draft folder to see if it is there. Do this for all
of your accounts and if the emails are not saved in your draft folder then
something has been clobared (love that term).

Of interest if you have multiple account email accounts you have to be careful
in the lists to ensure you are in the right one for that account. I find the
lists are not very well defined once you have more then one email account that
you traverse back and forth from.

I'm not sure my previous experience with Outlook 2010 agrees with what you are

whatever e-mail account I happened to be in at any one point in time.

Things changed for some reason a few months ago, and I find I can no longer do
this.

Why they changed as they did isn't clear to me, and I'm hoping I can get things
re-configured to where they were previously.

Outlook allows saving of email messages in one of the following folders within
the OUTLOOK DataFile:

1. InBox;

4. Outbox.

If you have additional mailboxes configured, these folders cannot be assigned

Tom,

Try this:

1. Open Outlook
2. Go to the File menu, and then right arrow over to the next tab, (I cannot
remember what it is called) 3. Tab down to "Open Outlook Data File"
4. Press Enter on this
5. You will be prompted for the file name, and type the following:
C:\users\Tom\documents\Outlook Files\"Outlook Data file name".
6. The name of the Data File should be something like Outlook1. You can
navigate to this location before doing this to double check the file name.
7. On the resulting page that opens, you will find links to view lists of the
emails from the folders like Inbox, Drafts, and Deleted Items.
8. Maybe you can find your lost messages here.

Goodluck.

I entered the exact subject line into the search box, which was xxx999xxx, but

Tom,

Thinking a bit outside the box now. What if you put some unique characters in
the subject line of a test email, like "XXXXX9999XXXXX" - whatever is unique.
Then do your usual ctrl "S" or your preferred save to draft method. Then do a
search using the alt key to bring up the Windows 7 Search box, then enter the
unique subject line test message string. Perhaps the search will disclose the
location of your saved messages and solve the mystery of the missing (or AWOL)
draft folder. Good luck!

Bob

Louise:

I just tried your approach by hitting Alt F4 to exit outlook. It asked me if I
wanted to save my message, just as it did when I used the escape key normally,
to which I responded Yes.

Unfortunately, even with this approach, my message was not saved. I could not
find it in either my local or g-mail draft, junk, saved, or spam folders.

I simply can't imagine where these messages are going, especially since I told
Outlook to save them in the drafts folder.

On your second note, I, like you, find it easier to find relevant folders in
Outlook by simply shift-tabbing to my folder list and accessing my desired
folder either via the arrow keys or by first-letter navigation.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions, though. I'll keep plugging away at things
here. Hopefully others will have additional things for me to try.

I'm also going to try to get some sighted assistance here to help determine
what might be going on.

One thing are you when opening office in the folders of your email address it
helps.

I use 2013 business and I have it open outlook by my email address and when
moving around to different folders I use shift tab and use letter like D for
drafts and then entre. I found this the easiest way to move around not control
Y.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Outlook 2010 Question

Hello, everyone.

I am experiencing a problem with Outlook 2010, that I can't seem to resolve.

If I am writing an e-mail, and find the need to leave my computer before
sending the message, I often like to save my message in the drafts folder.
My usual way of doing this is to hit the escape key, at which time I will be
asked whether I want the message to be saved. Of course, I respond by
answering "yes", thinking that all should be well. However, after I do this, I
look for the supposedly saved message in my drafts folder, and it is not there.
I check both my local drafts folder, and the drafts folder under my expanded
outlook folders. The last time this happened, I even checked my drafts folder
on the g-mail web site, under my personal g-mail account, and it was not there
either. I have also checked my deleted items, junk, outbox, and saved folders,
but no message appears there either.

What makes this especially annoying is that I did not have this problem a month
or so ago.

I'm wondering if something has been updated in Windows so as to make this
saving function less easy to perform?

I posted this quiry several days ago on the other Jaws list

[email protected]

and although I have gotten several suggestions, none have worked thus far.

One other note: I have tried the control S key command as a way to save the
message. However no saving options appear when using this key command.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

P.S. I hope this quiry is not considered to be "off topic" for this list.
I am a new member, and don't want to wear out my welcome right from the start.
