It is a function in Word, not Jaws causing this problem and I think it is 
shift-F8 or maybe control F8, the one thing I am sure of is that it is the F8 
eye, not sure which combo will turn this off at the moment and am using 2010 
here.

If you hit Alt V, that will put you in JAWS Verbosity. You will need to 
arrow down until you get to the punctuation options, and you can opt for 
none, some, most or all. It could be that there is something else in those 
choices in JAWS Verbosity that would solve your problem, but I don't know 
what that is.

One time I had some kind of smart tag or something and ended up calling 
Freedom Scientific Customer Service. The woman I talked to was really smart, 
got me right to what I had to do to make it stop doing that, and I believe 
that it was in JAWS Verbosity. That was about ten years ago, so I don't 
remember the details, only that we did get a solution.
