Carolyn,
Yes, I have the dongle as I said for those times when JAWS refuses to
authorize for some hardware reason, and I'm stuck with zero keys to use
via
the ILM. It has saved me. That being said, I know that there is a key
ready
for me on line should I need it for ILM, and I have three computers with
JAWS installed, all with ILM authorization. Freedom Scientific tries to
minimize multiple usage to three computers per licensed owner, and owning
the dongle means that the number of keys you have available to you drops
to
one. It's not rocket science how they do it, so there are no hard and fast
rules. Give them a call and discuss purchasing a dongle. I personally
don't
see why they would refuse any request. When I called them for a dongle
several years ago, I got no pushback.

When my husband had Vista, I still had room left on my license, so we just
loaded JAWS onto it, and I had it on my XP.

I currently use a Dongle to authorize my JAWS and Open Book applications.
At one time, I was having quite a bit of trouble keeping my computer
running, which turned out to be a defective motherboard, and I was going
through JAWS activations like watter through a sieve. I received a call
from Freedom Scientific wanting to know why I had been requesting so many
authorization renewals, and I explained that my computer kept crashing on
me, and when I would get it to start working again, JAWS would announce
that it needed to be authorized to run. They told me that I was going to
have to purchase a dongle, or stop using JAWS. So, I forked out the $45
for
the dongle, and have been using it ever since. Freedom Scientific will not
sell you a dongle just because you want one, you have to be able to show
just cause for needing it. They are nice in the fact that you authorize
your software just by plugging it into your computer before starting it
up,
and you can use it on more than one computer, but the down side is that
you
cannot run JAWS on more than one computer simultaneously. Freedom
Scientific will not sell a licensee more than one dongle, and if you are
using the regular authorization method, you can authorize the software on
up to 5 computers at one time, so in effect, by using a dongle, you are
reducing the number of computers that you can operate at one time.
Granted,
no one has a reason that I can think of to run 3 to 5 computers at the
same
time, but I do own 2 computers, and I did have occasion to run both of
them
at the same time, and I miss not being able to do this from time to time.
Using a dongle has its pro's and con's, be sure to weigh them for yourself
before you attempt to acquire a dongle.

All a dongle does is authorize your version of jaws. It does not slow
down
or speed up your system and no you cannot make one on your own.
I believe they are a very good thing to have around.

Dave, does using a dongle slow the use of the computer more than running
JAWS in demo mode?
(and a stupid question, but it's only stupid if I don't ask, right?) it
can only be purchased from FS, or can one create one by themself?
and is there a certain reason/condition that warrants the use of a
dongle?

Lenny,
You'd benefit by having a dongle for JAWS. That way, you can run JAWS on
your wife's machine as long as you need, with the dongle connected.
Costs about $40.

I just did some searches. It is quite interesting on the manual steps to
get
rid of that thing. Fortunately there is a safe search removal tool.
Tomorrow
I will have my wife download and run it I really do not want to install
jaws on her machine. 40 minutes at a time is not long enough. .
