I currently use a Dongle to authorize my JAWS and Open Book applications. At
one time, I was having quite a bit of trouble keeping my computer running,
which turned out to be a defective motherboard, and I was going through JAWS
activations like watter through a sieve. I received a call from Freedom
Scientific wanting to know why I had been requesting so many authorization
renewals, and I explained that my computer kept crashing on me, and when I
would get it to start working again, JAWS would announce that it needed to
be authorized to run. They told me that I was going to have to purchase a
dongle, or stop using JAWS. So, I forked out the $45 for the dongle, and
have been using it ever since. Freedom Scientific will not sell you a dongle
just because you want one, you have to be able to show just cause for
needing it. They are nice in the fact that you authorize your software just
by plugging it into your computer before starting it up, and you can use it
on more than one computer, but the down side is that you cannot run JAWS on
more than one computer simultaneously. Freedom Scientific will not sell a
licensee more than one dongle, and if you are using the regular
authorization method, you can authorize the software on up to 5 computers at
one time, so in effect, by using a dongle, you are reducing the number of
computers that you can operate at one time. Granted, no one has a reason
that I can think of to run 3 to 5 computers at the same time, but I do own 2
computers, and I did have occasion to run both of them at the same time, and
I miss not being able to do this from time to time. Using a dongle has its
pro's and con's, be sure to weigh them for yourself before you attempt to
acquire a dongle.

All a dongle does is authorize your version of jaws. It does not slow down
or speed up your system and no you cannot make one on your own.

JAWS in demo mode?
(and a stupid question, but it's only stupid if I don't ask, right?) it can
only be purchased from FS, or can one create one by themself?
and is there a certain reason/condition that warrants the use of a dongle?
