yeah, I got into that one time too, what a nightmare! Mine was a result of facebook.
But now, I use the cloud to keep my contacts, and do not use window's contacts which was through iTunes. You first have to put all the contacts you want into your IOS device, then turn on contacts in iCloud, if you have additional IOS devices it will synce the contacts to that device as well. When you add/remove contacts from one device, it will be same on another. I have done this on my iPhone 5s, however, I did not like the results because all of my email contacts were synced with my phone contacts as well, and I had an enormous amount of phone contacts that I didn't have phone numbers for, only email address.
