In Windows 10, as well as Windows 8, the antivirus protection is called
Windows Defender.
Windows 7 called it Security Essentials.

I thought it was a virus protection. If not for virus protection, what is
it for?

Believe you are referring to the free MS Security Essentials application?
In that security notification window (Found in the system tray) is a
link to checkout Anti-Virus programs. You'll have to visit that page
to download/install it. That is if MS still offers the free
anti-virus program to Windows 10 users. Windows Defender is not an
Antii-Virus program.
