of windows update

Let me get this straight, Microsoft is going to automattically update people
to windows 10 who have windows 7, 8, or 8.1 even if they have not reserved a
copy of windows 10 is this correct?
If so are your files deleted when this update/upgrade is complete or are
all your files/programs still on the computer intact?
