if you feel the opening to the port, without pushing your finger, you'll
feel a bar with a slight division in the middle. this is USB 3.0. a port
that does not have this split bar is USB 2.0. so in other words, the USB
3.0 has slightly protruding contacts, and USB 2.0 are well... just
there, waiting to make contact.

Use your smallest fingertip. Run it along the opening. An HDMI and USB 2 slot
will feel empty in the center of the opening, with nothing there to impede
pushing in a small object. The USB 3 port will have a definite blockage that
you will feel with your fingertip. Sounds like you may not have any USB 3 on
your computer.

Gary Ray here.
I am unable to feel the difference between the USB 2 and USB 3 connections.
Could you be a bit more descriptive as to how to accomplish tactile
identification.

I should note that on my Dell Latitude E series laptop, a single 2.0 port
and the single 3.0 port are on the right side, a single 2.0 port on the left
side, and at least two more 2.0 ports on the back. Again if the color blue
does not help, again the 3.0 port feels like there is a slight obstruction
in the center, as though the connecting pins are brought out toward the
surface of the port.

USB 3.0 ports are the same shape as USB 2.0 ports, and usually are blue
in color. usually, but not always, the 3.0 port is on the left side of
the laptop.
that odd shaped port must be something else, like a HDMI port?

There is a port next to the two 2.0 ports that is a different shape.
