Hello Lenny:

I am an old-timer and I remember the Arkenstone days and their fabulous 800
number that Freedom Scientific still uses, but before there was Open Book, I
remember they had a system called Ruby and I believe there was another even
prior to that one.

One think to recognize is that us DOS users were dead on the water when
Windows came out, until Arkenstone figured out how to use the "OSM" or
Off-Screen-Model and shared their knowledge with other resources for the
blind; that was how Ted Henter, of Henter-Joyce, was able to come out with
JFW, if memory serves, by the time Windows 3.1 came out. By the time
Windows went to Win 95, and internet became available to most of us, things
really looked up.

All the best,

Humberto

Subject: [JAWS-Users] first openbook and jaws

Not sure how many old-timers there on the list. I was just thinking about my

first openbook from Arkenstone. It had a dedicated IBm 286 10 meg computer
with a Hp Scanner. For my first jaws for dos it was on a Unisys 386. The
openbook system was only $5,000 and the Unisys 386 was only $10,000. This
was around 1986. Imagine what computer and software you could purchase
today for $15,000. Look how far jaws for windows has come . I have the 47th

copy released to the public.
