Here is what I do. I am using MS-Word 2003, but have used this same technique in MS-Word 2000. Directions for Removing Hard Returns from a document . Select the text in which you want to remove unwanted manual hard returns. I prefer to do this for one paragraph at a time so as to prevent all of the text from ending up into one huge paragraph. . Use Control+H to open the Replace dialog box. . Be sure that the Find Edit field is empty. . Use Shift+Tab to move to the "Special Button Menu" . Press enter to open this menu. (Note, the space bar does not work here.) . Select "Paragraph Mark". This should be the first item on the list, but if it is not, use your up and down arrows to find it. . Press Enter to select. . Tab to the "Replace" edit Field. . Be sure this field is empty. . Press the Space bar to place an empty space that will be used to replace the hard returns. . Tab to replace all and press the space bar. . When this process is done, a dialog box will come up telling you how many replacements were completed. . You will need to get out of this dialog box, and then close the Replace dialog box. Note 1: Sometimes before, and sometimes after doing this process, I will select the text that I am working with and insert bullets. By doing this, I can easily find where the hard returns are and delete them manually. Note 2: You might want to play around with other items in the Special Button Menu. They might do a better job for what you are looking for. I just haven't had time to play around with it. The purpose of this is as some of you must know documents especially those that come across by email often are very fragmented where there might only be a few words on a line. I have a great many files that have this issue and although those of us who are JAWS users aren't really bothered by this it seems to me that these files if reformatted might appear better to those with some vision. Yes it is possible to take my text files in to the next room where my old DOS system is and using word perfect 4.2 perform this little trick of the trade so to speak. Obviously this isn't practical because it of course doesn't support long file names and the more tinkering around in that area the greater the chance for errors to creep in to the mix. I have some where in the neighborhood of 400 text files between the 2 web sites I update as regularly as I can with more to come I'm sure.
