I just tried this on a document that I had converted from a more primitive 
word processor.  Here's an additional note.  After selecting the paragraph 
press the left arrow a couple of times so the end of the last line of the 
paragraph is not selected.  Then the paragraphs will remain as they were and 
not be put together.  In word 2003 after the dialog saying how many 
replacements were made I get another one stating that word has finished 
checking the selection and asking if I want to check the rest of the 
document.  You want to say no to that one.
