In that case, something's hosed on your computer. I've used Narrator extensively ever since it was first included in Windows and am here to tell you that selecting Exit and pressing ENTER is the way to close it.
Here are my Narrator settings: Announce Events on Screen is checked Read Typed Characters is checked Move Mouse Pointer to the Active Item is checked Start Narrator Minimized is not checked These check boxes are immediately below the Help, Voice, and Exit buttons in the main Narrator dialog.
