Another reason for JAWS to stop talking is the simple factor of system
performance. The more horsepower a system has and the fewer applications
that are attempting to share that horsepower, the better JAWS performance
will be. Right now, I'm forced to use a laptop with a 1.6 gigahertz
processor and while this sounds fast, it's really pretty slow when compared
to the 3.0 gigahertz processor on my Dell, which is temporarily unavailable.
I can see a huge difference between the performance of the laptop and what I
was used to with the Dell and if I forget to close a couple of applications,
I will experience some silence from JAWS, especially when in Internet
Explorer. JAWS, itself, along with Eloquence, place a lot of overhead on any
system and the slower the processor, the poorer the performance is going to
be. I don't know what most of you are running, but I wouldn't even consider
using JAWS and Eloquence on any system with a processor speed less than 1.5
gigahertz or so and at least 512 megabytes of RAM memory because I can
almost guarantee fairly unacceptable performance. JAWS has become more and
more sophisticated and, as a result, processor-intensive since version 5 and
computers that could run version 5 very well may not be able to handle
version 7.0 or 7.10. If your computer is marginal in terms of its processor
speed and throughput and you seem to sense that JAWS is performing worse
than it used to, you could very well be right, but for the wrong
reasons--perhaps you need a new computer.

Frankly, I can't see that much difference between seven and 7.1. They both
stop talking to me whenever they feel like it. Lol.
