I've heard many opinions on the Window's firewall you mention below. I
guess my question would be why would Microsoft include an inferior product
on the XP edition of Windows? Furthermore, how does one know how well it
works? If this is more "off list" write back to me that way. I also have
some questions on routers.

Those are not firewalls. Windows has its own very meager firewall that's
almost worse than no firewall at all, since it gives a false sense of
protection. David has at least one on his download site (he mentioned it
here earlier this week) and there are many available for free around the
net. Like I said, though, I much prefer a router, since you are absolutely
guaranteed no pop-up windows asking you to authorize some program or other
to access the network.
