It's just a guess, but maybe it would fix the file, and then you would have 
to check for updates?

Windows File Checker and it's not a program for the faint of heart. You need
an installation CD for the version of Windows currently installed on your
computer. The program checks all Windows system programs, looking for any
that are in any way corrupted, hacked, etc., and replaces them from the CD.
The problem is that if you have a Windows XP original CD and you've
installed service packs and updates over the years, I don't know how you
deal with the fact that the file WFC thinks is corrupted and needs to be
replaced isn't on your CD, but was installed by one of those service packs
or updates. If anybody knows more about this program, I'd like to talk to
you. <g>
