*** Uhm Bob, I think you're referring to the hibernate mode. As far as I know, that is the only mode that supports saving information and workspace details to the hard disk. Stand by is just a power saver option for letting your computer run on minimal power, while you go off and have that thirty-first cup of coffee. If the computer cord gets wrenched from the CPU or the grid in your area loses power, you will lose anything that you might have been working on if in stand by mode. In hibernate mode, it is as you described.
