Dick: Thanks for reply. I see nothing for wireless when I remove the dongle so I assume that all wireless networking, when this unit was built, was optional on a pc card. (there is a slot to plug one in). So, I guess my decision to purchase a dongle (which works fine), was the right one. Yes, I did a google search, and had found this page, but didn't scroll down to see the options before. I guess back in the good old days, pc cards for networking were in the $2-300 range so, end users would opt in or out of the technology. I know I still have a 8mb card somewhere that cost me $80. Tried to sell it for $2.00 at a garage sale, but not takers. Dave

I found this specs page: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11997_div/11997_div.HTML. It implies that the wireless is either optional or different options might be included. I would suggest looking at your System properties (see Control Panel) then under the Hardware tab click on Device Manager. Does it show anything under Network Adapters? That is where you should find any detected hardware. Good luck, Dick On Thu, Feb 3, 2011 at 8:23 PM, David Grenfell <[email protected]> wrote: Hi guys. Yes, I'm still alive. Here is a question. I'm working on a hp compaq nx9030 laptop, and the wireless lamp on the unit does not light when I push the button on the case. Does this old unit come with built in wireless network hardware, or do I need to purchase a pc-card for wireless connection to plug into the slot, then download drivers if I need them? I have solved the no connection problem, by purchasing a usb dongle and using that for now, but am curious about original equipment. P.S. as I upgraded this old girl, it started to run slower and slower and I discovered that it only has 256mb of memory. I am going to install another 1gb to solve this problem. I know, I should have told my client to simply order a new laptop, but this one belongs to our church (donated by some-one who out grew it). I'm basically donating my time, and they will have a working laptop for about $150.00 CDN. That's about $22 American. (Just joking, our dollar is pretty good right now) Any way, if anybody has any thoughts, they are welcome.
