Bob: Thank you so much for your input. Based on your thoughts, I scanned my hardware devices list, and found a "network controller" that was not functional. I right clicked it, updated the software from the net, and voila ! My wireless indicator came on, and by adding my security key, was able to log on to my wireless router. Just prior to this I had opened the trap door on the bottom of the computer and found the wireless card you mentioned. Again, thanks so much. This group is awsome. Dave Grenfell

Based on my experience with similar Compaq laptops I would say look underneath the laptop for an access panel. Another location to check is under the keyboard which isn't too difficult to get at if you are careful. The card itself will be about the size of a business card and will be slotted in like memory and have two wires connected to it. These cards to go bad on occasion and you can get a replacement on ebay for about $5. Just unplug the old and pop in the new and you should be good to go. I found this specs page: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11997_div/11997_div.HTML. It implies that the wireless is either optional or different options might be included. I would suggest looking at your System properties (see Control Panel) then under the Hardware tab click on Device Manager. Does it show anything under Network Adapters?
