Richard, I believe you have been down this road before.
It sounds to me like this is a Windows-only (GDI) model printer. This type of printer does not know how to print without being driven by Windows. IOW, only Windows applications (like Word and notepad) know how to print to it. Look up DOSPrinter <http://dosprinter.netfirms.com/> in http://jbase.markmail.org/ to get the solution.
