Actually the proper way to do local file resolution in NT is to edit the
%SystemRoot%/system32/drivers/etc/HOSTS file. It has the same format as
/etc/hosts in UN*X. I always make sure that there is an entry for local
host since NT will consult this file before doing any external namespace
search (DNS or WINS):
        "127.0.0.1 localhosts"

Hi,

Maybe this is the fix - isn't there a file that comes with Windows
called "HOSTS.SAM"? On Win 95, this is in the C:\WINDOWS or
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory I think.

Rename this file to "HOSTS", and add entries into it for your localhost,
and other host on your lan, if necessary.

Reboot. (Of course!! :-)

AFAIK, you'll now get MS's approximation of Unix name lookup: it'll
first look in this file, and if the name is not found, will try DNS.
