An Emacs/XEmacs integration is `in progress' at NetBeans. Whether that
would work best as an adjunct to JDE or a replacement I'm not sure...

OK, OK, a status update--I know a lot of people have asked about this! Yes,
it is still in progress but looking much better. Really the editing itself
works fine at this stage. The integration is not a standard "hey editor,
please do something with this file and let me know when you're done";
rather, the line of communication between Emacs and the IDE is completely
live and bidirectional, and it works fine to switch between the Editor and
the Explorer window to e.g. modify Bean parameters, or add new property
bundle locales, or internationalize at point, or use generated code from the
Form Editor, or step through code in the debugger, all without
saving-and-reloading or any such nonsense. Basically an external Emacs
assumes all of the functions of the regular editor.

The main delay is getting the entry to and exit from the editing mode to be
less cumbersome. Both Emacs and the IDE have to agree that they are both
ready to communicate, and the IDE has to be made to *not* open up an Editor
tab itself as Swing-based editors normally do (Emacs is not embeddable into
the Java window), and a host of network errors have to be handled
gracefully. When these types of problems are dealt with better than they are
now, we will be comfortable releasing an alpha preview of the integration
for folks to pound on.

BTW, the integration supports both Emacs and XEmacs (as well as Unix and NT
both) the same way, and permits the IDE and Emacs to be on different
machines.
